Whitby Doctors was established in 2000 in its present site in Whitby Mall.  On 01 July 2014 the Practice expanded to include Dr Larry Jordan and his team of nurses and receptionists.  To accommodate  the additional staff and patients, the reception desk and waiting area were significantly altered to create a lovely new space with a welcoming atmosphere.

Whitby Doctors is a Cornerstone Accredited Practice.  Cornerstone is an accreditation of quality achieved through the Royal NZ College of General Practitioners “Aiming for Excellence” programme.

We are close to other health related services in the Whitby area  - physiotherapist, pharmacy and dentist.

Doctors

Dr David Robinson

GP/Director

David trained at Otago University, he did his clinical and postgraduate training in the Wellington area and has since always practiced in the Porirua area. He shifted to the Whitby community in 1986 and has lived in its environs since. With Merryl, Jill and Jo he set up the Whitby Doctors practice in 2000 having previously worked in Waitangirua . He has been active in the General Practice community having served as a director in the local after hours service, as a director on the Tumai PHO, has served as an examiner for College of General Practitioners, and currently sits on the PHO Quality Committee. He enjoys the long term family relationships only found in General practice, and is now looking after the babies of the babies he delivered.

Dr Merryl Park

GP/Director

Merryl has been a partner with Whitby Doctors since it was first established in 2004.
Merryl graduated from Medical School in 1992 and spent the next 5 years working in NZ and the UK in a wide variety of hospital jobs and indulging her passion for travelling by bicycle all over the world. Merryl is passionate about good quality general practice and enjoys working with her patients and the team at Whitby Doctors. Merryl’s work interests encompass all aspects of general practice care. For a number of years Merryl has been working as our holiday cover to ensure that all of our GPs can have a good balance of work and play.

Merryl’s personal interests are many and varied and include living sustainably on her organic farm, conservation volunteer work, a wide range of outdoor activities including tramping, mountain biking, kayaking, skiing and in her quieter moments art festivals, movies and reading. Merryl also enjoys travelling to other countries to learn about other cultures, food and different ways to live.

Dr Larry Jordan

GP/Director

Larry trained at Otago and Wellington and after 33 years in his solo family practice in Porirua East he was delighted to join Whitby Doctors, together with his small staff, in 2014. He has a wide range of interests in practice, including maternity (active in obstetrics in earlier decades) and gynaecology, child health, minor surgery, longterm condition management and preventive care – plus health care organisation and governance. He has been involved in Primary Health Organisations for many years and is currently the chair of Compass Health. When time allows, he likes to be in his large garden, build things for his big old house and enjoy many genres of music.

Dr Anna Wyeth

GP

Anna was raised on a sheep and beef farm in the Wairarapa. Anna graduated from Otago University in 1995. Anna has experience working in hospitals around the Wellington Region and in the UK. For 18 1/2 years Anna worked and served the NZ Army both in NZ and overseas including two Tours of East Timor prior to joining Whitby Doctors in 2011. Anna is married with two children. She enjoys general practice and feels honoured to be involved in your healthcare journey.

Dr Ho Young

GP

Ho is of Chinese ethnicity. His grandfather migrated to NZ during the gold rush in Central Otago at the end of the 1800’s. Ho is a Graduate of the Otago Medical School in Dunedin and worked as a house surgeon in Blenheim and Dunedin Hospitals. Then followed a 3 year stint studying Pathology before embarking on a general practice career. In Dunedin, he ran a private practice in a group practice for nearly 29 years before “semi-retiring” in Wellington. Ho joined Whitby Doctors in 2007 and is enjoying being an associate here ever since.

Dr Michaela Hobbs

GP

Michaela trained at Otago University, graduating in 2000 with a medical degree and a science degree in clinical nutrition. She has been working as a General Practitioner since 2005 and joined Whitby Doctors in 2011 after working in Ireland and in Lower Hutt. She chose primary care to pursue her interest in preventative medicine and well health management. She is married with two children.

Dr Caroline Hastrop

GP

Caroline trained at Otago University and did a degree in psychology before her medical degree. Since graduating in 1992 she has worked in Wellington, Lower Hutt, Porirua, Western Samoa, London and more recently, has returned from a few years living in Vanuatu. Caroline was working for Whitby Doctors soon after it was first established and although she has left several times to go overseas and to have babies, she has always come back! She is married with four children. Caroline enjoys many things about general practice and loves being part of the Whitby Doctors team.

Dr Fipi Hastie

GP

Fipi (from Fiji) Hastie joined Whitby Doctors in November 2015. She grew up in Fiji, Whenuapai (where her dad was an aircraft engineer for the RNZAF) and Wellington. After completing a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology in 1994, she went on to complete her medical degree at Otago Medical School then worked in hospitals in the Wellington region - general practice is more her cup of tea however. Fipi has one husband and a golden retriever (Bear), enjoys the outdoors, sun, food, roti chanai, reading, travelling and sleep.

Jill Stevens

Director/Primary Healthcare Nurse

Jill trained at Wellington Public Hospital registering in 1982. Her hospital experience over the years included mainly Surgical and Theatre Nursing. She moved to Practice Nursing in 1998 and was a founding nurse of Whitby Doctors when it opened in 2000. In 2001 she was offered a Director Partnership in the new Practice. She is extremely proud of the committed and experienced Nursing team providing services to our practice population and local community. She completed the Bachelor of Nursing qualification in 2001 and has since gained a Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Health Care Nursing. She enjoys the challenges and rewards of both acute and long term care and the privileged relationships established with families.
In her spare time Jill is usually watching the Black Caps.

Jo Jarvis

Primary Healthcare Nurse

Jo registered in 1981 having trained at Wellington Public Hospital. She has been a Primary Health Care Nurse since 1999. As one of Whitby Doctors original nurses she provides 15 years of experience in Primary Health Care Nursing in addition to her previous hospital experience. She has a Post Graduate Certificate in Primary Health Care Nursing. Jo enjoys the long term relationships with patients and families and provides a wealth of knowledge of the community she has lived in for many years. Jo has recently gained a qualification in Clinical Supervision and is looking forward to mentoring other nurses.

Yvonne Morgan

Primary Healthcare Nurse

Yvonne has recently completed a clinical Master of Nursing qualification and is currently working towards registration as a Nurse Practitioner. She has worked in the primary health area for the last 13 years and enjoys working in partnership with patients and families to help them reach their health goals. Yvonne has a special interest in supporting patients with management of life long conditions. When not at Whitby Doctors, Yvonne can usually be found in the outdoors enjoying our beautiful country.

Vanessa McLennan

Primary Healthcare Nurse

Vanessa has worked at Whitby Doctors for the past 11 years. She is completing her clinical Masters of Nursing this year. Vanessa enjoys working with all patients but has a special interest in youth health and patients with high needs.

Mary Saunders

Primary Healthcare Nurse

Mary began with Dr Larry Jordan in his practice at Mungavin Avenue ten years ago, and came with him when he joined Whitby Doctors last year. Mary has a particular interest in working with patients in the community, together with an ongoing commitment to the After Hours clinic at Kenepuru Hospital. She specialises in diabetes management, and loves working with families to optimise their health. She feels both passionate and privileged working as part of a comprehensive health team based in Porirua. Mary is a gourmet cook and often energises the team with amazing food.

Katy Stevens

Primary Healthcare Nurse

Katy completed a Bachelor of Nursing in 2011 at Whitireia Community Polytechnic. She has four years experience in Cardiology as well as Cardiothoracic surgery at Wellington Hospital. She joined Whitby Doctors this year and brings recent acute experience and new ideas to the Nursing team. She will continue to practice part-time at Wellington Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit, and enjoys the contrast of acute nursing with caring for families long term in General Practice. Katy values the prevention based role of Primary Health and the focus on keeping people well. In her spare time she enjoys travel, the outdoors and all things food!

Sarah-Jane Thorpe

Primary Healthcare Nurse

Sarah has just recently graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing from Whitireia Community Polytechnic. Within this Bachelor programme Sarah has gained clinical experience in aged care, oncology, child and adolescent mental health and primary health care. Her passion involves working in partnership with individuals, families and the wider community to help improve, maintain and restore people’s health including promoting preventative health care initiatives. Outside of nursing Sarah enjoys focusing on her young family and learning all there is to know about how and what to grow in the garden.

Patsy Watt

Primary Healthcare Locum Nurse

Patsy is our Locum Practice Nurse who regularly provides cover when our Nurses are on leave. Patsy trained at Hutt Hospital, graduating in 1969. Since graduation, she has worked in Rheumatology, Orthopaedics, Occupational Health and Continuing Care. Patsy also worked for a Pharmaceutical Company specialising in Womens Health and maintains that interest today. For more than a decade Patsy has been working throughout the Wellington Region as a Locum Practice Nurse.
